American Apparel has got to be one of my favorite stores, mostly because they manufacture the only pair of jeans that fit me near-perfectly without tailoring, the Easy Jean (I like my jeans to be so high-rise they're practically touching my chin).
While a few American Apparel items are, at least in my opinion, slightly overpriced, the good news is that they make up for it with fantastic deals and discount codes. Their most recent one ended on December 14, with 25% off all new styles, but since Christmas is coming up, we can probably expect another code from them soon.
With the end of '70s revival nowhere in sight, it's not surprising that American Apparel is going into the '70s with full force, even bringing out that gold metallic lamé material that you may remember from their leggings circa 2008, which drunk young men would sometimes wear to street festivals, and which drunk young women would often wear to '80s workout themed parties in college. In particular, they've given us some great options for the less neutral side of '70s revival--the disco era. Get ready to sparkle:
1.) Metallic Jersey Wrap Top, $38
Slightly disco, and slightly modern, this wrap top is perfect for a slightly more casual New Years' Eve, or just a night out. If you want to add a bit of '70s metal to your wardrobe without going full-on disco ball, this could be a good starting piece. In silver and gold, this top could look cute with a black high-waisted A-line skirt, or even a pair of bellbottoms (yes, they're coming back in. Shut up.)
2.) Metallic Jersey Adelyn Jumpsuit, $74
This is what I meant by "full-on disco ball." I imagine this jumpsuit was a potential costume choice for Forrest Gump's Jenny, during the scene where she's on coke and about to jump off that building (the '70s in a nutshell, right?) Don't let that description turn you off this jumpsuit, though. As shocking as it may look at first, the right attitude and style could take it from costumey to cool. Also a good New Years' Eve choice, and definitely a stand-out in comparison to the ocean of LBDs or silver sequin dresses. Not to mention it also looks comfortable. With a long necklace, a bangle, a black clutch and a pair of simple earrings, I could see this taking any party by storm. It comes in shiny gold and a slightly more subdued black shade, but I'm all about the gold. Go big or go home.
3.) Metallic Jersey Strappy Maxi Dress, $62
This dress is cool because it works perfectly for your classic pear shape--it shows off slender arms and a small, perky, braless bustline, but conceals everything below the waist. This means you can look slim and sexy while also eating ten slices of pizza, because nobody will see your bloat. Definitely eye catching (in silver and shimmery black) this dress makes an entrance, but also carries with it an air of vintage elegance. Something tells me, however, that this dress doesn't do a great job of concealing headlights (what? It's cold outside!) so perhaps pasties are in order.
4.) Denim Charlie Pant, $78
I'm not holding my breath, but this appears to be the flare version of the Easy Jean (a suggestion I've actually written into American Apparel. They didn't respond to me.) If that's the case, then I need these yesterday. Flares are back, no matter how much people claim they're universally unflattering (they said the same thing about skinny jeans ten years ago) and these are the perfect on-trend flares. The leg is wide without being cartoonish, and the rise is high enough that they won't be confused with the flares of 2002, which gave everyone a lower belly donut and love handles, and made everyone's legs look five inches long.
5.) Ponte Foil Tank Dress, $58
This is a great piece if you don't want to jump into the '70s head first, but you still want to add some disco-era glitz. This dress is a bodycon midi dress, which is more 2015 than 1975, but with the foil finish it could take you right into the age of disco. Bodycon silhouettes aren't the most forgiving, so this is definitely an option if you're in a showing-off mood. This dress comes in a deep bronze color, a metallic pale silver, and a metallic black. And a word of advice: American Apparel's ponte line appears to run small (I'm normally an XS-S and I take a M in this line) so order a size or two up.
6.) Metallic Slinky Wide Leg Pant, $48
These initially look a little funny, but I'm convinced they'd be cute with a simple, high-neck black crop top, minimalistic jewelry, and some black platforms. They come in gold, black and silver, and they appear to be some of the comfiest going-out pants I've seen yet. Elastic waistband? Sign me up.
